The Benefits of Group Therapy: How Group Connection Can Help Adults, Teens, and Kids Thrive

Sometimes, one of the hardest parts of struggling is feeling like you're the only one going through it. Whether you're an adult navigating anxiety, a teenager trying to fit in, or a child learning to manage big emotions, feeling understood can make a meaningful difference.

That's one of the reasons group therapy can be so valuable. It brings people together in a supportive environment where you can learn, grow, and realize you aren't alone.

What Is Group Therapy?

Group therapy brings together individuals with similar experiences, challenges, or goals under the guidance of a trained mental health professional.

Unlike individual counseling, group therapy provides opportunities to learn from others, practice new skills, and develop meaningful connections.

Groups may focus on topics such as anxiety, emotional regulation, social skills, relationships, stress management, or personal growth.

How Can Group Therapy Help Adults?

For adults, group counseling can provide a space to explore challenges while connecting with others who may understand similar experiences.

Benefits may include:

  • Feeling less alone: Recognizing that others share similar struggles can reduce isolation.

  • Learning new coping skills: Group members can discover different ways to manage stress, anxiety, and everyday challenges.

  • Building confidence: Sharing experiences and receiving support can encourage personal growth.

  • Improving relationships: Groups offer opportunities to practice communication and develop healthier interpersonal skills.

For some adults, group therapy can also be a helpful complement to individual counseling.

Why Is Group Therapy Helpful for Teens?

Adolescence can be challenging. Between friendships, school expectations, family relationships, and figuring out who they are, teenagers often experience significant emotional and social pressures.

Group therapy gives teens an opportunity to connect with peers in a structured, supportive setting.

Teen counseling groups can help adolescents develop communication skills, manage emotions, build self-esteem, and navigate social challenges.

For teens who feel misunderstood or isolated, discovering that others have similar experiences can be particularly meaningful.

How Can Group Therapy Benefit Children?

Children often learn best through interaction, practice, and age-appropriate activities.

Children's therapy groups can provide a supportive environment for developing important emotional and social skills.

Depending on the group's focus, children may work on:

  • Recognizing and expressing emotions

  • Developing friendships and social skills

  • Managing frustration and disappointment

  • Building confidence and self-esteem

  • Practicing communication and problem-solving

Group counseling also gives children opportunities to practice these skills with peers while receiving guidance and encouragement.

Is Group Therapy Right for Everyone?

Group therapy can be beneficial, but the right fit depends on each person's needs, comfort level, and goals.

Some people benefit most from individual therapy, while others find that participating in a group provides additional support and opportunities for growth.

A therapist can help determine whether a particular group may be appropriate.
